On Lake Apopka's North Shore This Winter, the Day of the Week Decides the Route

From the hills around Bella Collina, Lake Apopka looks like one body of water. The marsh on its far shore runs on a calendar. The 11-mile Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive opens to cars only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays. Since late October, the Loop Trail between Laughlin Road and the Limpkin Point Kiosk has closed on exactly the other four days.

The timing matters because this is the North Shore's peak season. The St. Johns River Water Management District has recorded 377 bird species on the property and says more than 150 use it regularly in winter. That is the stretch between now and February. If you plan around the split, Monday through Thursday gives you the Green Mountain end of the lake, and Friday through Sunday gives you the drive plus the whole length of the trail.

The marsh you're looking at used to be lake

Knowing what the North Shore is explains the closures. Its 20,000 acres were once part of Lake Apopka. A levee built in 1941 cut them off, shrinking the lake from more than 50,000 acres to just over 30,000. The land was farmed for decades. The District has since turned the old muck farms back into wetlands, including a Marsh Flow-Way that pumps lake water through restored marsh to filter it.

Part of that system is now in a work program. In its Lake Apopka project update, the District lists work scheduled for completion by December 2026:

  • Regrading the Wildlife Drive for safer, smoother access
  • Regrading and cleaning the Marsh Flow-Way pump basin to improve pumping efficiency
  • Rebuilding several miles of slopes along the lake for stabilization and wave attenuation, mostly next to the Loop Trail
  • Regrading the treatment wetland and Sand Farm areas, and redirecting their flow toward the Duda area

December is the schedule. The [October 20 closure notice], which describes construction around the pump basin,(https://www.sjrwmd.com/2026/10/lake-apopka-north-shore-closures/) keeps the trail closure in place "until work is completed."

How a week on the North Shore lays out right now

The district's current notices on its recreation announcements page make the week look like this:

Monday–Thursday Friday–Sunday
Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, 2850 Lust Road Closed to cars, except federal holidays Gate open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., vehicles out by 5 p.m.
Loop Trail, Laughlin Road to Limpkin Point Kiosk Closed Open
Road east of the Flow-Way Pump Basin Closed for construction Closed for construction
Clay Island southwest-corner tower and Marsh Flow-Way south-end tower Closed for repairs Closed for repairs
Green Mountain Scenic Overlook & Trailhead Open 7 a.m. to sunset Open 7 a.m. to sunset

The road west of the pump basin stays open. So does the stretch of Loop Trail just north of the basin, though the District asks trail users to take care there. The notice says plainly that the Wildlife Drive "remains open and unaffected." The two closed towers stay shut "until further notice," and the rest of the trail system is open.

Monday through Thursday, start from Green Mountain

On the District's trail map, the closed Laughlin-to-Limpkin segment sits on the north and east part of the route, north of the North Shore/McDonald Canal access. Green Mountain is at the opposite, western end. The historic pump house and Conrad Road lie east of it, and Clay Island lies northeast of those.

That makes the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook & Trailhead, at 20700 County Road 455 in Minneola, the weekday entry for Bella Collina residents. It is a 9-acre Lake County park, open 7 a.m. to sunset and listed for biking, trails and nature viewing. It is one of three Loop Trail trailheads with restrooms. The others are North Shore/McDonald Canal and Magnolia Park, and the historic pump house has port-a-lets. No trailhead offers drinking water along the trail, so bring your own. Horses are not allowed at Green Mountain or Magnolia Park because both are county parks.

The Loop Trail covers more than 20 miles. It runs out and back along the northern half of the lake for now, and the District plans for it to circle Lake Apopka eventually. From the west end, the open stretches cover a lot of ground before reaching the weekday closure.

Clay Island is the other Lake County option, at 22526 Carolyn Lane in Astatula. It has a 6-mile white loop for hiking, biking and horseback riding, plus 2.6 miles of red trail. It also has four observation towers, one of them overlooking the lake's west shoreline. The one at the southwest corner of the loop is the one under repair this season.

Friday through Sunday, take the drive

The Wildlife Drive is the North Shore's main draw, and its rules are strict. It runs one way, entering at Lust Road and ending on Jones Avenue in Orange County. The speed limit is 10 mph, vehicles over 25 feet are not allowed, and neither are trailers. You can stop only at the designated pull-outs. Leashed dogs are allowed. There are a few restrooms and a picnic pavilion, but no drinking water. The District estimates one to three hours for the drive, depending on traffic and how often you stop. Part of the route is shared with hikers and cyclists on a multi-use trail.

Since the gate closes at 3 p.m., a weekend drive means an early start. Coming from Lake County, the North Shore Trailhead and McDonald Canal Boat Ramp at 24600 County Road 448-A in Mount Dora is the launch point for kayaks and canoes.

The holidays that open the gate on a weekday

The District's list of federal holidays turns a few weekdays into drive days this season. Here are the ones between now and the end of winter birding:

  1. Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2026
  2. Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2026
  3. New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2027
  4. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, 2027
  5. Presidents' Day, Monday, February 15, 2027

The two Mondays matter most. Those are the only days in this window when you can drive the marsh at the start of the work week. The trail notice's Monday-through-Thursday closure between Laughlin Road and Limpkin Point carries no holiday exception, so on those Mondays and on Thanksgiving, plan on the drive and leave that stretch of trail for a weekend.

The season's set pieces

Orange Audubon Society's North Shore Birding Festival runs December 3–7, 2026, and registration is open. At the 2025 festival, birders counted more than 209 species. Highlights included Vermilion Flycatchers, Roseate Spoonbills, Painted Buntings and 22 species of ducks and mergansers. That is a festival-long total. The North Shore's best single day remains the 1998 Christmas Bird Count, which logged 174 species. The District says that is the highest Florida Christmas Bird Count for any inland location.

After the festival, Orange Audubon's calendar runs into the new year:

The festival runs Thursday through Monday, so its first and last days fall outside the drive's regular Friday-to-Sunday gate hours. The January trip and the February classes both land on weekends.

The District lists alligators, bobcats, otters, bears, raccoons, armadillos and coyotes as regular sightings. Its advice is short: do not approach or feed any of them.

A paved way in from the Oakland side

One addition this year gives cyclists coming from the Orange County side another way in. Orange County says the Lake Apopka Connector Trail opened on February 28, 2026. When construction started, The Apopka Voice reported that it would link the West Orange Trail at McCormick Road to the Loop Trail at Magnolia Park, 2929 S. Binion Road. The West Orange Trail runs from the Orange/Lake County line through Killarney, Oakland, Winter Garden and Apopka to Welch Road. That puts the North Shore on the same paved network that passes through Oakland.

Closer to home, South Lake Tablet's September roundup listed Drift Cafe at 16937 Lakeside Dr. in Montverde as a coffee, ice cream and dessert café. The District updates its notices as work wraps up, so check the St. Johns River Water Management District's announcements page the morning you go.

Bella Collina is one of the few places in Central Florida where the lake is part of the everyday view, and the people who live here tend to know its seasons. If you'd like to talk about homes along Lake Apopka's western shore with someone who follows this side of the lake closely, Andrea Alonso and Team Gabriel are here in English or Portuguese.
