Celebration at 30: How the Fall Season Builds From Rocktoberfest to the Founders Day Town Photo

What happens in Celebration this fall that won't happen again next fall? Leaves will fall on Market Street again in 2027, and snow will fall over Town Center again next December. The Pop2000 concert is a touring show. The one item that can't repeat is a photograph, set for 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, in Founders Park. Town Hall calls it the 30th Anniversary Town Photo.

Every other event on the October to December calendar sits somewhere around that photo. Some come before it, some after, and some were scheduled a whole year ahead to lead up to it.

The date downtown was finished

The town's anniversary comes from a sequence of dates. ClickOrlando's history of the town lists them in order. Disney announced Celebration publicly in 1991 and broke ground in 1994. The first family moved in on June 18, 1996, and downtown was completed on November 12, 1996, the day that became Founders Day.

That puts this year's Founders Day on November 7, five days before the 30th anniversary of downtown's completion. It also puts it four days before Veterans Day, so Town Hall has folded the two together. The morning starts with a Veterans Day parade that leaves Lakeside Park at 10:30 a.m. and ends at Founders Park. A Veterans Day ceremony follows at 11:00, and then everyone gathers for the photo. The parade has an application, and you can download it from the Founders Day page on the town's official site.

A year of homework at 690 Celebration Avenue

The anniversary year didn't start in November. In March, the town's official site listed a 30th Anniversary Logo Hunt for March 16, running from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. In April, the Celebration Foundation started a monthly speaker series. Its theme is "how Celebration came to be."

The Foundation itself turns 30 this year. The Walt Disney Company formed it in 1996 to promote civic involvement in the new town. Its series runs April through November at 690 Celebration Avenue, which the Foundation identifies as the original Town Hall. Sessions alternate between the second Saturday and the third Wednesday of the month, and each Saturday talk ends with a walking tour.

The first sessions filled quickly. The April 18 program on the Pattern Book and planning sold out to a waitlist, and so did the June 13 Founders' Stories session. According to ClickOrlando, pattern books kept the town unified in design and gave it a small-town feel, whoever built the homes. Two dates are left:

  • Saturday, October 10, 9 a.m. Technology and Walking Tour
  • November, date to be announced. A closing session on the Celebration Foundation itself

Every session is free but requires registration. Registration opens about 30 days before each date, either at celebrationfoundation.org or by phone at 407-566-1234. That means the October 10 tour is already open for registration, six days out. The November session could open at any point this month.

Three hosts, one season

On the calendar, the fall season looks like one town program. Three different organizations actually run it. The Foundation hosts the speaker series. Celebration Town Hall runs Founders Day, and its Parks and Recreation Department takes questions at 407-566-1200. Downtown's festivals are a Town Center production. The 20th annual Rocktoberfest is presented by Lexin Celebration Commercial, LLC, with sponsorship from Experience Kissimmee, Axis Magazine and The Celebration Town Tavern.

Here is the season in order:

  1. Every Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebration Farmers Market at 603 Market St.
  2. Saturday, October 10. Foundation speaker series, Technology and Walking Tour.
  3. Friday and Saturday, October 16 and 17. 20th annual Rocktoberfest on Market Street.
  4. Saturday, November 7. Founders Day, 30 Years of Celebration.
  5. Saturday, November 14. Alfa Romeo Car Show at 701 Front St. and the Embrace of Celebration Music Festival at Lakeside Park, on the same day.
  6. Saturday, November 28, through the end of December. Now Snowing, nightly at Celebration Town Center.

Saturday, November 7, hour by hour

Founders Day splits into a civic morning and a free evening. Town Hall describes the evening as open to the public, with Kid Zone inflatables and food and beverage tents.

Leaves in October, snow in December, same clock

Downtown's two signature festivals run on the same format. At Rocktoberfest, leaves fall over Market Street at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. on both nights. Admission and parking are free. Friday, October 16, opens with Emcee Mark Daniel and DJ Bubbles, followed by the acoustic duo Frequency and Lovestruck Robot. Saturday, October 17, features Audio Exchange with Jonnie Morgan. The Town Center also lists hayrides and a stroll along the lakeside promenade.

Six weeks later, Now Snowing brings back the hourly pattern and adds an earlier drop. Experience Kissimmee lists snowfall at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Its season description includes Santa, carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, train rides, synthetic ice skating and a Snow Village, and it lists admission and parking as free.

Founders Day falls between those two runs, and November 14 adds a second busy Saturday a week later. The Alfa Romeo Car Show takes over 701 Front St., the same address the Town Center gives for Rocktoberfest's Friday listing. The Embrace of Celebration Music Festival runs noon to 9 p.m. at Lakeside Park. Its listing describes a free, family-friendly lineup of 15 acts on two stages. Between November 7 and November 14, downtown and the lakefront host something on back-to-back Saturdays. Two weeks after that, Now Snowing starts its nightly run.

Where the published schedules disagree

The hosts, the Town Center and the regional tourism listings don't always match. Here are the differences as of early October:

  • Rocktoberfest Saturday hours. The Town Center's event detail says 5 to 10 p.m. Experience Kissimmee lists 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. for both nights.
  • Alfa Romeo Car Show hours. On the same Town Center page, the description says 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the event-detail fields say 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Founders Day dates. Experience Kissimmee shows a Founders Day listing on Thursday, November 5. Town Hall's own schedule doesn't include it.
  • Now Snowing's last night. The Town Center events index says the run ends December 30. Experience Kissimmee and Visit Celebration list December 31.

In each case, the organizer's own page is the one to check closer to the date. That means Town Hall for Founders Day, the Foundation for the speaker series and the Town Center for the downtown festivals.
